Pugnitello: Rediscovering a Mysterious Grape

Leopoldo IGT unveils the allure of Pugnitello, an indigenous grape variety from Tuscany, Italy, deeply rooted in the region’s ancient history. Once cultivated by the Etruscans, the early inhabitants of this area before the Roman era, Pugnitello’s existence echoes back to a time when vines climbed along trees in their natural trails.

In recent years, concerns over the “genetic erosion” of Vitis vinifera, attributed to factors such as the phylloxera blight and selective breeding, prompted collaborative efforts. The University of Florence, in partnership with farms and wineries, embarked on a monumental project to rediscover and cultivate indigenous vines. This initiative aimed to represent all existing vines in Tuscany, with approximately 230 varieties genetically verified as distinct. Through the meticulous process of “microvinification,” involving small-scale wine production from each plant, only about 30 varieties proved suitable for winemaking.

Leopoldo IGT, crafted from Pugnitello, stands as a testament to the resilience and uniqueness of this mysterious grape variety. As we rediscover and celebrate Tuscany’s rich viticultural heritage, each sip of Leopoldo IGT reflects the dedication to preserving and showcasing the diverse expressions of authentic, indigenous vines.
Pugnitello Vinification: A Fistful of History

In 2003, our early experiments with Pugnitello revealed its distinctive qualities. Named after the closed fist shape (“pugno” in Italian) of its grape bunches, the origin might also be traced to the Latin “Pugna,” meaning fight or war. In ancient times, soldiers were often fortified with robust wine before battle, and Pugnitello proved to be the perfect grape for crafting such potent wines.

As a relatively new grape variety, oenologists are continuously uncovering its unique qualities and characteristics, exploring the most suitable winemaking techniques. To deepen our understanding, our farm has engaged in years of experimentation in collaboration with the vines research center CRA of Arezzo. Last year focused on experimenting with harvest times, while this year’s exploration involves crafting rosé wine using indigenous vines such as Pugnitello, Canaiolo red and pink, Mammolo, Orpicchio, and Foglia tonda.

Leopoldo 100% Pugnitello: Handcrafted Excellence

Our Leopoldo 100% Pugnitello begins with a meticulous hand-harvest in the first week of October. The grapes undergo a gentle destemming process, followed by a 20-day fermentation at 28 °C with maceration, pumping over, and délestage. Maturing for 12 months in 225 lt French oak barriques and an additional 12 months in the bottle, this wine transforms Pugnitello grapes into a deep purple-hued red.

Unveiling pronounced blackberry, black cherry, and floral aromas, Leopoldo 100% Pugnitello boasts a full-bodied profile, balanced acidity, and high-finesse tannins. With a warm, rich finish, it is ideal for medium to long aging, offering a sensory journey into the unique character of Pugnitello and the Tuscan winemaking heritage.
